Every home in the subcontinent knows the surahi — the long-necked vessel that has held water and its place on the table for centuries. The Doue borrows that silhouette and hands it to another era: the sharp two-timber contrast of 1950s European modernism, where dark and pale woods were set against each other and left to argue beautifully.
Solid blocks of dark sheesham and pale ash are joined first, then the whole form is turned by hand on the lathe. The chevron along the body is not painted, printed or inlaid on the surface — it appears where the two timbers meet as the curve is cut, which means the pattern goes all the way through the wood. Tilt the piece and it moves. Then comes the finish the piece is named for at a glance: a heavy, high-gloss polish, built coat over coat, until the surface catches the room's light and hands it back.
Above, an ivory empire shade — the classic tapered profile — throws a soft, diffused light with no glare. The supplied LED steps through three colour temperatures, warm to cool, so the lamp reads for you at night and works beside you in the day. The plinth carries the studio's brass plaque, and the underside is lined in leather, so the piece sits kindly on any table it lands on. Forty will be made. Yours arrives numbered and signed.
