In Rome's Pantheon, the oculus is the round opening at the crown of the dome — the building's only window, and its whole point. This piece borrows the idea and the name. A full cross-section of solid teak — sagwan, the heirloom wood of the subcontinent — keeps its dark bark edge and its honey-gold grain, the growth rings still legible across the face. Seen from the side, the grain carries small gold flecks, teak's natural character catching the light. Through the centre runs a ring of soft, warm light.
Log slices have a reputation: left natural, they crack as they dry. This one will not. The slice is kiln- and steam-dried first, then stabilized under a transparent epoxy layer, sanded back, and sealed in a hardened lacquer — the full treatment, in that order, before the light ever goes in. It is why we can put a lifetime warranty on the wood: the movement that ruins ordinary slices has been taken out of this one.
A 24-volt LED ring sits recessed in the opening behind a silicone diffuser, so the circle glows as one unbroken line — warm, even, and cool to the touch. Brightness adjusts through the included controller, from reading light down to a faint ember. Eighteen slices make up this first edition, and because no two cross-sections of a tree are alike, no two Oculus lamps are either. Yours arrives numbered and signed.
